ORGAN India, in its role as the Official Member Organization from India for the World Transplant Games, has partnered with the Manav Rachna Sports Science Institute and Dr. O. P. Bhalla Foundation to host a badminton and football training camp for transplant athletes who are hoping to participate at the World Transplant Games 2023.

India has traditionally been known as a strong force in badminton. While players such as P. V. Sindhu and Saina Nehwal have become household names, what is not so widely known is that our athletes have been bringing in medals at the World Transplant Games since 2011. Athletes like Balveer Singh, Dharmendra Soti and Davies Jose Kollanur have been some of the most prolific medal winners at the World Transplant Games over the last decade. These athletes, once on the brink of disability and death due to illness, received the gift of organ transplant and today live healthy and active lives.

Gearing up for victory! 19 transplanted athletes gathered at the Manav Rachna Sports Science Center from 1-5 August to for a training camp to prepare for their upcoming participation at World Transplant Games at Perth 2023. Coming back from the brink of death, these athletes who have had heart, kidney and liver transplants were eager to hone their skills to be able to win medals for India at a Global Platform!

As Team India prepares for the next World Transplant Games to be held in Perth, Australia in April 2023, our goal has been to take the very best team, given the very best training. We are delighted to have partnered with the Dr. OP Bhalla Foundation and to have been able to provide our athletes with the tools they need to do our country proud at the Games.

The Camp

The 19 transplanted athletes were given a series of physical and psychological assessments of fitness, stamina, and injury risk at the Manav Rachna Sports Science Center. This was followed by training sessions and exercise programs customized for individual athletes to work on better fitness and stamina. The programs were also customized as per their relevant sport. They also underwent psychological assessment and were given training to develop coping skills in high-pressure environments. Athletes were also given counselling on sports nutrition, specifically relevant to transplant patients to develop good nutrition habits to be able to compete at a higher level.

While the mornings were devoted to classroom and gym-based training, in the afternoons, the athletes moved to on-court and on-field technical training in their respective sports.

The team was also given the opportunity to meet and interact with accomplished sportspersons and leaders in various fields such as Anjum Moudgil, (Indian Pistol shooter – Ranked No. 1 in the world) and Munkhbayar Dorjsuren (Mongolian-German Pistol Shooter and 2-time Olympic medalist as well as the coach for the Indian National Pistol Shooting Team).

Our thanks to the Dr. Amit Bhalla, Shri Ronjan Sodhi, Mr. Sarkar Talwar, Dr. NC Wadhwa and the entire team of Dr. OP Bhalla Foundation and Manav Rachna Sports Science Center for this incredible opportunity.

Meet the Athletes

As part of the Times Organ Donation Drive, some of our athletes were able to take out time to talk about their organ donation experience, their learnings, and their hopes for the future.
